This paper presents results carried out on polymeric high voltage direct current (HVDC) model cable. Two aspects are considered: partial discharge (PD) and current measurements, with the aim at investigating possible growth of voids of micrometer size.

This paper presents the design of a power electronics converter to produce strong current pulses (about 400A) in the core of a HVDC cable in order to use the thermal step method to evaluate the ageing state of the dielectric component. The described converter uses a magnetic coupler with intercells transformers and is current controlled. Epoxy resins crosslinked with acid anhydride hardeners are widely used in high voltage insulation. They have excellent dielectric, electrical and mechanical properties up to relatively high temperatures. However, neat epoxy systems exhibit low thermal conductivity and unsuitable coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) when used with metallic materials such as high voltage conductors.
